Immensely proud of Samantha, Isabella and Emma in Year 8 who have just received 1st place in the Northland Film Competition. The 3 girls entered their short film they made from their Personal Passion Project in Term 2. These girls worked pretty much completely independently throughout the entire process, including using their own initiative find and enter this competition.

The film was shown at the ANZAC Theatre in Dargaville and was judged by a large panel which included Winston Peters!! The judges commended them on their acting and filming techniques.

Congratulations girls - what a top job! $300 is coming your way!!

Butterfly tagging

Check out this informative clip from Beth and Liam on the process of butterfly tagging in our junior school. We are so lucky to have such a knowledgable teacher like Mrs Ryan in our school. It looks like all the classes in the junior school have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the monarch butterflies.

Mini Olympics

These were a lot of fun. Every child in the school was involved and we separated the children into a number of countries, keeping the siblings together. The year 7-8 children ran the whole project from start to finish, inventing some games and using other events that we know and love such as the gumboot throw, tug o war and wheelbarrow races!

As you can see from the was  lot of fun!

The BumNotes

The BumNotes are 4 kids (Gus, Rupert, Louie and Harry) from Muritai School who love music. Aged just 11 and 12 we are all enjoying seeing them go from strength to strength in their own right and their frequent performances at our school assembly are extremely popular in Eastbourne! In term one they went into the recording studio and Gus's dad put this film together making Cyber Race their "first" music video.

Teachers from Arizona

We hosted Chrissi and Janice from Tempe, Arizona yesterday. They are in New Zealand on a teacher exchange programme between Tempe and Hutt City. It was lovely to meet them and show them around our school. Rose caught up with them "in the Principal's office" and asked them some challenging  questions.

Cross Country 2012

What a wonderful day we had for our Cross Country this year. Held at Days Bay the course ran along Williams Park for year 3-4 and up into the bush for year the 5-8 children. The year 3-4 ran 1km, year 5-6 ran 2km and year 7-8 3km (including 2 hill climbs!). We were so impressed with the quality of running of our children - not everyone's cup of tea, but all gave it their best shot. Our fastest children will form the school team for the zone sports held soon. Thanks to our older children who ran with our younger children and supported them through this challenge. Enjoy the movie - (about 10 minutes).

Anzac Day 2012

Our children play a large part in the Anzac Day ceremony each year. Not just our kapa haka roopu with powhiri, haka and waiata, but also many of our children were part of the parade as members of the scout group and the rugby club or with their family. Kieran took the camera along and captured the bits that he thought were best to remember a very special day in Eastbourne in 2012.

Speed Stacking

The is a new craze sweeping Muritai School called speed stacking. This came into Muritai with the arrival of our new AP Mr McKay and in this short clip the MTV team show what it is and what it looks like when done well.

PCT challenge

Eight of our year 8 children entered into the PCT challenge, a nationwide physical challenge for year 7-8 children run by the New Zealand Police. Xavier, Cahon, Zara and Freijah qualified for the national finals. Have a look at what they had to do to qualify - remember it was a team effort, not an individual challenge.

Andy Jones - visiting musician

Andy Jones is a musician from Australia. He tours schools introducing electronic instruments to children. He was a lot of fun and we loved hosting him at Muritai. Here is a snap shot of Andy performing. He invited some children up, including Rose and the school band to share the stage with him. Rock on!!!!

The Butterfly Garden

Elspeth talks to Mrs Ryan about the process around developing the butterfly garden. Thank you to the Bayer Science Fund for their financial support.

Forest Lakes Camp 2012

Our year 5-6 team had a wonderful time up at Forest lakes Camp near Otaki recently and the camp was a huge success. The children excelled in their challenges and had a wonderful time.  Camp has many opportunities for children to learn in an environment outside the classroom.  Gradually over the 3-4 days the children had to tune into the rigours of really looking after themselves and each other; in particular actively using the key competencies in our NZ curriculum - relating to others, participating and contributing and managing self.

Enjoy this slideshow of kiwi kids having a great time "at school". Music by Anna Mac and Hollie Smith.

The Butterfly Garden

We have a wonderful addition to our school. We have replanted our courtyard plants elsewhere and installed a butterfly garden in the courtyard. Our courtyard is now full of colour and monarch butterflies. This projected, coordinated by Barbara Ryan and funded from a grant from the Bayer Science Fund has been a huge success. The kids just love it. The MTV team checked in with 3 of the kids to find out what it was all about.

The parent item at Forest Lakes camp

Our year 5-6 team spent 4 days at Forest Lakes camp north of Otaki last week. Associate principal Deane McKay led the camp superbly and great teamwork between the teachers, parents and children saw a wonderful experience for all concerned. The camp wrapped up with the traditional camp concert with the parents presenting the highlight of the night with their version of Abba's 'Waterloo'. They got lots of help from the kids...........
